Portals help businesses stay informed and proactive via one web page

January 19th, 2009 by bsnyder

I’ve noticed lately that many customers and professionals in the field of Business Intelligence have been stating that 80% of all data is unstructured in nature (emails, chat room text, newsgroups, document based applications) and is where some of the most vital information resides.  In order to get to that information quickly, something must happen to combine emails, chat rooms text, news groups, blogs, sharepoint, webpshere, SAP and other document management systems content so that an executive manager, IT group and customer get the information they need.

So yes, you need your dashboard, standard reports, alerts and ad hoc capabilities.  This is vital information, but not all of it.  To get the right information to the right person at the right time, I think companies need to be creative and consolidate content info meangful proactive content.

By thinking business first and technology second, I think a company is taking the right steps to help them keep in line with company objectives, inititatives, goals and targets.

The dashboard gives you the ‘important’ information as it sees fit. Humans still need to decide what is pertinent, and that is why business needs to decide. The best solution to send right information at right time to right person is to create a work flow that mimics the business decision making process. This is complicated because the work flow is not always simple, repeatable or single tracked. That is why organization maturity levels (like CMM) fit so tightly with BI maturity of an organization.
